SYDNEY 2017:
Concert 2 - The History of the Piano Trio

  • The Independent

Mozart Trio in B flat, K. 502  (1786)
Dvorak Piano Trio in E minor, Op. 90 “Dumky"
Ravel Piano Trio in A minor (1914)

In our second concert we begin with Mozart’s trio in B flat K. 502, which rejoices in the rich classical voice of this emerging genre. From Mozart’s salon we travel to Czechoslovakia for Dvorak’s most popular folk tunes, embodied in his beloved ‘Dumky’ trio. Finally, we come to Ravel’s great trio, which remains even today, a wondrous modern incantation of sound and texture.

MELBOURNE 2017:
The Nationalists - The History of the Piano Trio

  • Melbourne Recital Centre

Johannes Brahms Piano Trio in B, Op.8
Antonín Dvořák Piano Trio No.4 in E minor, Op.90 ‘Dumky’

Seraphim Trio continues its musical journey through time performing gems from the history of the piano trio. The Trio celebrates the nationalists with music by two great friends, Dvořák and Brahms. While Brahms remained loyal to German Classicism during a time of Romantic opulence, he recognized in his young Czech friend a kindred melodic inventiveness and gift for musical line. Brahms was also instrumental in the publication of Dvořák’s ‘Dumky’ Trio, one of the most beloved trios of this era.

MELBOURNE 2017:
The Moderns - The History of the Piano Trio

  • Melbourne Recital Centre

Dmitri Shostakovich Piano Trio No.2 in E minor, Op.67
Maurice Ravel Piano Trio in A minor, Op.67
Peter Sculthorpe From Irkanda III

Seraphim Trio explores the 20th-century piano trio with Peter Sculthorpe’s ‘From Irkanda 3’ and other music of the moderns, Ravel and Shostakovich. Ravel’s Trio remains, even today, a wondrous modern invention of sonority and texture while Shostakovich’s Trio, with its palpable expression of grief, remains painfully relevant in our century. Sculthorpe’s glittering ‘From Irkanda 3’ propels the genre to a bright and hopeful future.

ADELAIDE 2017: Weekend Feast at the Art Gallery of South Australia

  • Art Gallery of South Australia

A feast of music and food over a weekend tracing the history of the piano trio.

Over the weekend of 8 and 9 July 2017, three concerts will be held at the Radford Auditorium, Art Gallery of South Australia with a special three-course Coriole wine dinner on Saturday evening.

Following its recently acclaimed cycles of Beethoven and Schubert trios, in 2017 Seraphim Trio launches a celebration of the history of the piano trio journeying through time from the Viennese salon of Beethoven, to the rich subjectivities of Brahms, the vivid folk imaginings of Dvořák and the colour and majesty of Ravel.

“I wanted to write a slightly bent, playful take on the fairy-tales, with a sprinkle of humour, while not denying their power, and their grip on our hearts and minds – especially on the unconscious parts of our minds, where stories tell us things about ourselves, even if we don’t want to hear them. In other words, I wanted to have my ironic cake, but eat it with real feeling.” – Peter Goldsworthy

“I wanted to write a slightly bent, playful take on the fairy-tales, with a sprinkle of humour, while not denying their power, and their grip on our hearts and minds – especially on the unconscious parts of our minds, where stories tell us things about ourselves, even if we don’t want to hear them. In other words, I wanted to have my ironic cake, but eat it with real feeling.” – Peter Goldsworthy.

Seraphim in Kadina

  • Harvest Christian School

On Thursday 31 July at 11.30am, Seraphim Trio will perform a very special public concert at the Harvest Christian School in Kadina.

Seraphim is visiting Kadina on a tour of the Yorke Peninsular as part of its commitment to supporting music programs in schools, generously supported by the Thyne Reid Foundation.  As well as the public concert at 11.30am, the group will also spend time with students in a private session specially tailored to demonstrate the piano trio to young people and to convey Seraphim’s passion and knowledge.

Seraphim Trio also has a strong personal link to Kadina and the area. Anna's father, the author Peter Goldsworthy, was born in Minlaton, moving later to Kadina where his father, Reuben, was headmaster of Kadina Memorial High School. Anna's aunt, Cathy, continues the family tradition as a music teacher at Kadina Harvest School.

Tickets will be available at the door from 11am (half an hour before the concert).  The trio will be selling and signing their CDs  - and Anna her books - after the concert.  All are welcome.  Enquiries to Cathy Nicholls 88 214 945.
